Bettie was born and raised in Washington DC. She completed her BS degree at Catholic University and then left to work in Ghana, West Africa, in 1979 where she worked as a teacher, and met her husband. After completing their assignments, the two traveled extensively throughout Africa and Asia. They eventually settled in Larounge, Saskatchewan where they've lived since, raising two daughters. Bettie had a love for books and learning and as a result shared this with all those around her. She became widely acknowledged for her advocacy and good work in literacy, which had far reaching impacts. Her memory will be greatly cherished by all those who've had the fortune of meeting her.

Betty was a dear childhood friend. We went to the same junior andHS. WIn our teenage years, we partied together on the weekend. We hung together all through high school. We lost touch after HS. But started communicating again in 2003 or 4. She somehow found out my work email and emailed me. We stayed in touch off and on until her death. I think of her from time to time!
